April is always a busy birthday month for me, but this year two celebrations feel especially close to my heart , my son and my brother. Both are Aries, both strong and full of energy, and I wanted to create something bold and masculine just for them.
For these cards, I stepped away from my usual clean and layered style and leaned into a grungy, mixed-media background. I used ink smooshing to build rich layers of earthy browns, deep burgundy tones, and subtle black splatter to create texture and depth. The organic movement in the background feels powerful and unpredictable, very Aries.
The gold-foiled Aries Zodiac Block press plate becomes the focal point, glowing against the distressed surface. I kept the embellishments minimal but meaningful, adding a few metallic accents and torn edges to enhance the rugged, masculine feel without overpowering the design. The sentiment “Always in Motion” felt especially fitting, both of them are constantly pushing forward and chasing their goals.
I have many birthdays in April, but these two cards are extra special because they were made with intention and love. Creating something handmade for family always feels different, more personal, more heartfelt, and somehow more powerful.
