Softly Sketched Blooms: A Watercolored Floral Card

Today I’m sharing a softly watercolored floral card featuring Altenew’s Build-A-Garden: Softly Sketched Blooms Stamp Set. This beautiful arrangement has a wonderfully loose, hand-sketched quality that seemed perfect for watercoloring.

I chose a combination of golden yellow, deep violet, soft gray and natural green, allowing the colors to move beyond the outlines in a few places. The result is an artistic, garden-inspired card with plenty of texture and movement.

Stamping the Floral Image

I began by stamping the large Softly Sketched Blooms floral arrangement onto watercolor cardstock using black archival ink.

Archival ink is a wonderful choice for this technique because it is waterproof once dry. This allowed me to add plenty of water and layers of watercolor without disturbing or smearing the stamped outlines.

Before beginning the coloring, I made sure the stamped image was completely dry.

Watercoloring the Flowers

For the smaller flowers, I used several shades of warm golden yellow, varying the intensity to give the arrangement a more natural appearance.

I left the three large flowers mostly white, adding soft gray, beige and muted lavender shadows around the centers and beneath a few of the petals. Leaving areas of untouched cardstock helped preserve the brightness of the white flowers while the subtle shadows created shape and dimension.

The smaller clustered blossoms were painted in shades of violet and deep purple, providing a lovely contrast against the yellow flowers.

Adding Color to the Leaves

I painted the foliage with a mixture of olive, moss and deep green watercolors. Instead of coloring every leaf uniformly, I allowed the shades to vary throughout the arrangement.

Touches of yellow and deeper green added warmth and interest, while the darker areas helped define overlapping leaves and create depth within the bouquet.

Creating the Loose Watercolor Background

Once the flowers and foliage were dry, I added a very light watercolor wash around the arrangement.

Soft green was added around most of the bouquet, with touches of violet near the purple flowers. I also included a few delicate splatters and areas of uneven color to complement the loosely sketched style of the stamped image.

This background helps connect all the elements without taking attention away from the beautiful floral focal point.

Finishing the Card

After the watercolored panel had dried completely, I trimmed it and layered it onto a narrow navy cardstock mat. The navy border coordinates beautifully with the violet flowers and gives the soft watercolor panel a crisp, finished appearance.

The completed panel was then attached to a white card base.

For the sentiment, I used “Wishing You a Lovely Day” from the same stamp set. I heat embossed it in white onto a strip of black cardstock and placed it across the lower portion of the floral arrangement. The bold black sentiment strip provides just the right amount of contrast against the soft watercoloring.

I really enjoyed letting the watercolors flow across this beautifully sketched floral image. The golden flowers, soft white blooms and touches of rich violet created a cheerful but elegant color palette, while the loose background wash added an artistic finish.
