Large floral stamps are always fun to work with, and this beautiful image from the Altenew Build-A-Garden: Garland Grace (April subscription) made it easy to create a vibrant anniversary card. The oversized floral cluster fills most of the card front, and the coordinating stencils make coloring quick while still achieving beautiful blended shades. I paired cheerful purples, sunny yellows, and fresh greens to create a bright and happy design that feels perfect for celebrating a special anniversary.
Stamping the Floral Image
I began by stamping the large floral image onto Neenah 80 lb cardstock using Hero Arts Intense Black Ink. This crisp black ink is perfect for detailed images and works beautifully when blending inks with stencils. Since the stamp is quite large, it nearly fills the entire A2 panel, giving the card a bold focal point right from the start.
Coloring with Coordinating Stencils
Next, I used the coordinating layering stencils that come with the set to color the flowers and leaves. For the ink blending I chose Simon Says Stamp Positively Saturated Inks in Sweets, Citrine, Mandarin, and Fairway. The stencils make it easy to build color and dimension quickly, and the bright shades created a cheerful spring palette. The large yellow flower with warm mandarin tones became the star of the card while the purple blooms added softness and contrast.
Filling the Panel with Dimension
Because the stamp is larger than an A2 card, I trimmed the stamped panel to fit my card base. Instead of discarding the leftover portion, I fussy cut the remaining flowers with scissors and used foam tape to add them to the opposite side of the panel. This simple trick helped cover the empty white space and added extra dimension to the design. I then mounted the finished panel onto pink cardstock for a bright frame that complements the floral colors.
Sentiment and Finishing Details
The sentiments are also from the same stamp set. I heat embossed them in gold on black cardstock, cut them into strips, and adhered them to the bottom right of the card with foam tape. The gold embossing adds a beautiful elegant contrast against the colorful background. To finish the card, I added yellow gems that coordinate with the large flower and used a gold gel pen to highlight the centers of the smaller flowers for a subtle sparkle.
This card shows how a large floral stamp combined with coordinating stencils can create a striking card design with minimal effort. The bold flowers, bright colors, and gold accents make it a joyful card that feels perfect for celebrating love and special milestones.
Watercolored Floral Congratulations Card
For my second card, I wanted to explore a completely different coloring technique using the same Garland Grace floral image. Instead of using the coordinating stencils, I stamped the image onto watercolor paper using waterproof ink so I could freely paint the design with watercolors. This approach gave the flowers a softer and more organic look compared to the crisp stencil-blended version on the first card.
Loose Watercolor Painting
Next, I colored the flowers and leaves using watercolors, letting the colors blend naturally on the paper. The large focal bloom was painted in warm yellow tones while the surrounding flowers were colored in soft blues to create contrast. I layered greens for the leaves to add depth while keeping the overall look loose and painterly.
Creating a 5×7 Card Panel
Since this floral stamp is so large and beautiful, I decided to make a 5×7 card so more of the image could be displayed. The larger card size allows the floral arrangement to shine without trimming away too much of the design. The watercolor panel was then mounted onto a black card panel, which helps frame the soft colors and gives the card a bold contrast.
Sentiment and Finishing Details
To add texture and interest, I sprayed Distress Oxide Spritz in blue, creating soft splatters across the background. The sentiment from the same stamp set was heat embossed in gold on black cardstock, cut into strips, and adhered across the center with foam tape. This adds dimension while keeping the beautiful watercolor florals as the main focal point.
These two cards show how versatile the Altenew Build-A-Garden: Garland Grace stamp set can be. By simply changing the coloring technique and card size, the same floral image creates two completely different looks, one bright and crisp with stencil blending, and the other soft and artistic with watercolor. I love how both designs highlight the beauty of this large floral stamp while celebrating special occasions in their own unique way.
Hugs,
Jyoti
