Playful Dachshund and Bold Sentiments

Today I’m sharing a pair of fun and lighthearted cards featuring adorable dachshund dies and bold sentiment designs from the latest Poppystamps release. These cards are all about simple techniques, clean layouts, and charming details-perfect for dog lovers or anyone who appreciates a cheerful handmade card. Let’s take a closer look!

Card 1: Yappy Birthday Wishes

A Playful Pup Takes Center Stage
For this card, I used the Leaping Dachshund die as the star of the show. I die cut the pup using kraft cardstock for the body and a darker brown for contrast. To give the dog some personality, I dressed it in a bright red sweater-cut from the same red cardstock I later used for the sentiment. A touch of foam behind the dog gave it some playful dimension.

Creating the Background with a Brayer
I wanted a quick and easy background that would let the die cuts pop. Using a small brayer, I rolled it onto my Forest Moss Distress Oxide Ink pad and then rolled it directly onto the center of a white cardstock panel. This created a soft, organic block of green, loosely imitating a patch of grass. I die-cut the panel with a rectangle die to make it slightly smaller than my card base.

Adding Softness with Vellum
My daughter recently gifted me a book filled with colorful vellum sheets, and I couldn’t wait to use them! I chose a soft peach vellum, cut it into a strip, and layered it over the brayered green panel. The peach muted the intensity of the green and provided a beautiful base for the dog and sentiment to shine without distraction.

Layering the Sentiment and Assembling the Card
For the greeting, I used the Yappy Birthday die. I cut it twice from red cardstock and layered the die cuts for a dimensional look. I glued the sentiment directly onto the vellum and used foam tape for the dog. To adhere the vellum to the background without visible glue, I added adhesive only behind the dog. Once everything was in place, I mounted the panel to a white card base-clean, modern, and ready to bring a smile.

Card 2: It’s Been Too Long!

Meet the Long Dachshund
The second card features the delightful Long Dachshund die. Like the first card, I used kraft and brown cardstocks for the body, and dressed the dog in a matching red sweater. I loved how the long body added a quirky, whimsical feel-perfect for a sentiment that says, “Been Too Long.”

Landscape Orientation for the Win
Because of the die’s long shape, I changed the orientation for this card. I used the same brayering technique as before with Forest Moss Distress Oxide Ink, but added the panel horizontally this time to suit the dog’s extended frame. Again, I trimmed the background panel down with a rectangle die for a tidy fit on an A2 card.

Layering with Vellum Again
I used the second half of the peach vellum sheet from the first card to maintain consistency. The vellum softens the green, just as before, and provides a clean canvas to layer the dog and sentiment. The pup was added with foam tape for dimension, and the sentiment was glued flat for balance.

Final Assembly and Finishing Touches
The sentiment Been Too Long was also die-cut twice from red cardstock for that subtle layered effect. I arranged both the sentiment and the dog on the vellum, adhered the vellum to the background with hidden glue behind the die cuts, and then attached the entire panel to a white card base. This card has such a friendly, heartfelt feel-perfect for reconnecting with someone you’ve missed.

Clean Design with Big Personality

Both of these cards came together with a few key elements-charming die cuts, a muted vellum overlay, and bold, playful sentiments. I love how the combination of kraft tones, red accents, and simple inked backgrounds keeps the design clean yet full of personality. Whether you’re sending birthday wishes or catching up with a friend, these dachshund cards are sure to bring joy!
